Seminars: Wednesdays 4:00 p.m. 283 EMRB
The Immunology Program has an active seminar series in which both Iowa faculty and distinguished guests present their latest research information. This series has brought to the University a number of outstanding visiting scientists. A number of additional guest immunologists present in other seminar series, such as those sponsored by the departments of Microbiology.
One unusual feature of our seminar series that is particularly advantageous for the Immunology graduate students is that the night of each speaker's visit is reserved for interaction with the students. Dinner is served at a faculty member's home, with only students and postdoctoral fellows present. This ensures maximum interaction of the students with the visiting professor, and fosters informal discussion about scientific and career matters. These dinners have been very popular with our students, who attend these evenings enthusiastically. During the summer, current graduate students and postdoctoral fellows present their work.
Journal Club: Wednesdays (Spring and Fall semesters, 1:30 p.m.) 2114 ML
During the fall and spring semesters, the journal club article will be related to the weekly seminar presentation. The assigned student (students were assigned randomly) will choose a couple of articles related to the seminar topic of that week and e-mail the host of that week’s outside seminar speaker to pick from the papers you selected. The faculty host will also be asked to attend the journal club. If the speaker is an in-house speaker, the student will choose a couple of articles related to the research topic of the in-house speaker, and contact the speaker to pick between the articles you selected. The paper does not have to be authored by the speaker. During the summer session, students present articles chosen randomly.
