Immunology Graduate Program

Molecular and Cellular Biology of the Immune System

Admission

director                       A Message from the Director:

The Immunology Program brings together investigators  from a number of departments, including Internal  Medicine, Microbiology, Pediatrics, Pathology,  Pharmacology and Urology. Faculty expertise and  research activities encompass a broad range of areas  allowing for excellent training opportunities in innate,  adaptive, cellular and molecular immunology. This  brochure describes the faculty and their research  programs. The curriculum consists of both introductory  and advanced courses in Immunology and elective  courses in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics,  Microbiology, and Pathology. Laboratory training applies current cellular, biochemical, and molecular technologies to important research questions. The Program also sponsors seminar courses and journal clubs and oversees a weekly seminar series. The latter regularly features a number of noted scientists from around the country and world, and can be viewed at http://immuno.grad.uiowa.edu/calendar/Seminars.asp. All students admitted to the Program receive a competitive stipend and all tuition is paid

Since 1994, the Immunology Graduate Program at Iowa has received support from a NIH Training Grant. The last renewal application received a score in the "outstanding" range, the highest category for NIH evaluations. Reviews of our grant described Iowa's Immunology Graduate Program as a "model Ph.D. training program". Importantly, this funding allows us to send each of our graduate students to a national immunology meeting each year, as well as provide enrichment funds for the purchase of books and/or subscriptions to scientific journals. In addition, The University of Iowa has been selected by ISI's Essential Science Indicators as an institution with a marked increase in publications and citations in the field of Immunology. They indicated the following: "In our latest analysis, your institution was among those whose citation rate in the field of Immunology was increasing most rapidly in the past decade. Being highly cited generally reflects the high regard in which your work is held by your fellow scientists, and its value to the scientific community as a whole".

If you are interested in the possibility of entering our graduate program, please visit http://immuno.grad.uiowa.edu/ for additional information. A complete description of the Program can be found, including admissions requirements and further details about our many research programs. You may also submit an electronic pre-application for admission, an easy exercise that does not require a fee.

The University of Iowa, with over 30,000 students, is a major public research university recognized for its long-standing commitment to teaching and research. The University of Iowa College of Medicine currently ranks 10 th among public universities receiving grants from the National Institutes of Health and second among Big Ten schools.  In addition to the laboratories of the Immunology faculty, all students can also utilize technologies provided by a number of central research facilities, including electron and confocal microscopy, image analysis, NMR, high resolution mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, molecular biology and protein structure cores.

The University of Iowa is located in Iowa City, a community of over 60,000, and is situated within 250 miles of Chicago, Minneapolis, and St. Louis. A variety of cultural, intellectual, and sports activities are available to all residents. Students at the University of Iowa are thus provided the opportunity to pursue a rigorous graduate education while living in a safe, pleasant, and supportive environment.
